VP-Elect is the First Woman… NOT the First Black Woman.
As a black woman, I live in a world that positions me ALWAYS based on my race and my gender– never as simply being human. And that is what I am FIRST. I am human.
While IT IS a big deal that VP-Elect Harris, as a woman of color, has made it to the white house… it is an EVEN BIGGER DEAL that she controls the narrative for all women in the future who will occupy that position. Once a white woman assumes that position, she too will be publicly framed by her gender AND race. And such a racialized treatment will, in a backwards kind of way, bring us a little closer to all being equal… a little closer to all being seen as fully human.
That is all. It simply needed to be said. She is the first woman– period– to be in that position.
