In this case, Dr. Ballerstadt talks about Civility as a contested concept; about tone policing, about the culture of comfort and about the difference between safe spaces and brave spaces.
She also talks about what to do when junior faculty say they have experienced racism or sexism She argues to not act shocked or express disbelief as this response only denies their reality and reinforces a reality that racism and sexism are not real.
In the close out of the call, I highlight two nuggets discussed in the conversation: 1) the difference between mentors and sponsors and 2) a need for a national conversation like the #MeToo movement that raises awareness to the racial violence experienced in the work place.
