One thing I appreciated in this case was when Dr. Liston’s talked about dignity as a sense of mutual self-worth within the human race and how race and gender (as social constructs) serve to disrupt our overall sense of oneness with each other.
This was the nugget I focused on in the close out of this episode but there was more that Dr. Liston explored in her treatment of the case. She talked about blackness within global white supremacy, about multiple community membership versus single community membership, and about identity as a contested concept.
This is an academically driven conversation but one that all people, academics and practitioners alike, should listen to as it helps us to understand what is really at stake when we do not do resistance and liberatory work around race.
